Jo is a Rwandan-British director and a graduate of Queen Mary University of London. She began her career in front of the camera, appearing in several film and television roles before moving behind it to direct her debut short film Bazigaga. The film was nominated for a BAFTA following an extensive festival run, including Clermont-Ferrand (where it won the France Télévisions Acting Award), FIFF Namur (Best Performance & RTBF Special Mention), and the Brussels Short Film Festival.
